Unlock the Magic of Underglazes!

Have you taken a few classes and fallen in love with pottery but struggle with glazing? Underglazes might be your best friend and ticket to unique finished pots without the mystery results of the glaze firing. Owner of Carved in Mud Studios, Jennifer Whilden, has been working with underglazes on wheel thrown pottery for 30 years. You might have seen her Frida Kahlo mugs in the VMFA shop! In this three day class you will explore several underglaze techniques on wheel thrown pottery as well as learning how to transfer your own designs to a pot and sgraffito. This class is open to anyone who is comfortable centering and throwing a pot! (Ages 16+) Fee includes 10 lbs of clay (more available for purchase) tools, and firing fees! Jennifer will dip your pots in clear glaze and you will return in a few weeks to pick them up.

What to expect:

Day 1- Throw 3-5 pots (and handbuild a shape if time/clay allows)

Day 2- Trim and apply underglazes

Day 3- Surface decorating, sgraffito, etc!
